I am not sure you guys heard about the .TEL initiative that will be available for the public in a couple of days but it is something truly interesting.Unlike the .com and the .org and the rest, this Top Level Domain is expect to bring a kind of a small revolution to the 'online' community. If you are interested, I highly suggest you have a quick read on http://www.telnic.org and then quickly go buy your domain. It should cost you around 20$ per year to have yourName.tel.
If you still want to know what .Tel is, well I can say it could be described as the internet phone book where every user would have his .Tel entry containing all the information the user wants to have there. Your business card in that case that you would be handing over to people you meet will just include yourName.tel from now on. So whether your address or phone number changes, all you need to do is update your .Tel and you will still be reachable.
Eventually your mobile phone address book will be pointers to the .Tel of every contact.
Plenty more services can be built on top of that and sky is the limit, but now is not the right time to detail all that. So check it out and prepare yourself to hear a lot about .Tel in the coming few weeks.

What's wrong with signing emails or handing over business cards?

Nothing wrong with that, the email signature and business cards will not contain any details, they will just contain "yourname.Tel".
That is all is needed to reach you now and for the rest of your life.
I can understand paying $20 per year for business reasons, but social networking has long been free for personal use. I just don't see people forking the $20, at least not at facebook growth rates.
think of it as the internet yellow pages (and white pages). Social networking is heavy, cumbersome on a mobile browser and definitely not something you want to share on a business card.
Imagine u need to send an email to a Dimitri and all u need to do is send the email to dimitri.tel (the email client will pick up the correct email).
to call dimitri you just dial dimitri.tel and the phone will pick up the number dimitri is reachable on (anytime, anywhere).
Assume you want the Marriott hotel number in Phoenix, AZ. it would be a pain to get it by browsing the marriott webpages while u r on the move while all you need to do is dial -> marriott.hotel.usa.az.pheonix.tel
i can go on and on about the benefits but this is not the place to do so. Research it on telnic.org (read the forums) and you'll feel the benefit and the difference with social networks.
Oh, and since you are a techie, .Tel info is stored in the DNS and not as webpages. furthermore they're very light XML type of data.
On the other hand, .tel for sure would be a platform for spammers to get their recipient's emails from (to say the least).
